Inside Passage Trip: Appleton Cove, Sitka

September 16, 2020

Gently swinging on anchor in Appleton Cove off Peril Strait on Baranof Island between Chatham Strait and the Alexander Archipelago of the great pacific. We travelled up the Wrangell Narrows to Petersburg this morning. Donned the mask and checked out the town a little, then fueled up, taking on 64 gallons and headed across Frederick Sound and turned North into Chatham Strait before turning west into this passage that will take us to Sitka tomorrow.

Many Whales today, we stopped to hear them breathe, and more porpoise. Nosed in to Cascade falls to stop and hear the water falling. The water was so flat the whole day a water skier would have had a blast. We came 114 miles from Petersburg.

What a quiet, peaceful place this is. A cup of Malbec, salmon and crackers. Life is good.

I don’t recall the last time I saw the night sky so clear. The swath of the Milky Way. The prominent Big Dipper pointing our way to the North Star. The sheer clean brilliance of these familiar friends. I’ve been away too long.
